Tasteful Noodz

What’s the best font for a beef noodle shop?

Times 牛肉慢 (Niú ròu miàn)

Tasteful Noodz is a calendar comprised of 12 illustrated noodle dishes. These drawings are a reflection of my experience growing up and devouring my family’s Shanghainese American noodly culture, building my identity, through food. As a child of immigrants, I feel a disconnect with where my parents call home, and this project was an homage to the aspects of my identity they passed down to me with pride.

Through this project, I learned there are many crossovers of various Chinese regions and even other East Asian cultures in how they create their particular noodle dishes. For example, I grew up eating 火车头 (Huo che tóu) in Chinese restaurants. It wasn’t until I was in high school that I learned what I thought to be a Chinese dish is actually Pho, a very popular Vietnamese noodle soup dish.
